Documentaries....... reality tv on steroids!!!

Ok…..I know it’s been a while since my last post and a lot has happened since then. I am officially done with masters #2. I now have a masters in Early Childhood Education as well as Administration in Elementary and Secondary Education (which I dubbed Principal School). I survived the summer and successfully scheduled over 1200 students for this year. I also trained our teachers this summer to use Moodle. Now that school has been in session for 3 weeks, things are finally slowing down…..a little anyways. So, I searched out for my new hobby and hit the jackpot this weekend!

You may or may not know that I LOVE to read (ok, I don’t physically “read” the books with my eyes……I use audible.com and “listen” to my books, which my friends often point out…..BUT please do know that the books I “listen” to are the unabridged versions which means that it is every word that is written in the book…..btw….an average book is about 11 hours…..but I digress). I have now caught up on all the good books I have wanted to read. As I am sure you are aware, I also LOVE to watch reality TV. And again, I caught up on viewing all my shows……so what’s a girl to do. Well, I’ll tell you…..it is watching documentaries on Netflix! This makes total sense if you think about it……it’s kinda like a reality tv movie, right?

This brings me to why I felt the need to blog today. I watched several documentaries this weekend. One was called “Unguarded” which was a very touching story about an amazing basketball star that got hooked up in drugs but was finally able to get clean. I had never even heard of Chris Herren before, but now am a huge fan…..it is one I will make my children watch because the story is so
powerful. I also watched “The U” which was also a very fascinating story about the University of
Miami’ s football program in the 1980’s and 1990’s. I also watched “Roll Tide/War Eagle” again, but
none of those are what I want to talk about today.

The last documentary I watched was called “The People vs. George Lucas”. I don’t even know where to begin with this one. The cliff notes are basically this…..there are MANY people all over this world who are obsessed with Star Wars and who are VERY upset over 2 things.

The first issue that all these people (many of whom are very smart and well educated) had with ole George was that he apparently (I had no idea) changed the original Star Wars film in 1997 to make it less grainy and added a few other minor tweeks. This has apparently affected many people on this planet who now have a hard time trusting mankind and functioning in everyday life. Really???!!??? This is what many people’s biggest problem they face in life is? I must be really out of the loop because this summer many of my closest friends have gone through MAJOR life crises (and no, this is not spelled wrong…it is the plural of crisis) and not one of them had to do with the tweeks in Star Wars.

The second issue was with the 1st three Star War movies that came out later and how lame they were. Again, this was totally life altering for many around the planet.

As I watched this documentary I was absolutely shocked at what an impact this movie had on such a diverse group of people around the world…..a movie that first came out in 1977 no less!! I was also surprised about the amount of thought and energy that goes into following (recreating, collecting, role playing, making movies, attending conventions, etc….) this movie…… STILL……..TO THIS DAY….. IN 2012! Wow…..it is truly mind blowing!!!

So, the point of this post is this…… be careful what you let your kid go see at the movie, because it could change their entire life path and frankly, make them weird…..just sayin’……until next time :) !
